Oxford Street May Become Car Free Under New London Plan

Oxford Street May Become Car-Free Under New London Plan

Major Changes Proposed for Iconic London Shopping Destination

Traffic Ban Part of Wider Sustainability Drive

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled plans to ban traffic on Oxford Street, one of the busiest shopping streets in the world. The move is part of a wider drive to improve air quality and reduce congestion in the capital.

Under the plans, all motor vehicles would be banned from Oxford Street between Marble Arch and Tottenham Court Road, a distance of around 1 mile. The ban would be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Mayor's office says that the ban would help to improve air quality on Oxford Street, which is currently one of the most polluted streets in London. It would also reduce congestion, making it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to get around.

The plans have been welcomed by environmental groups, who say that they would make a significant contribution to improving air quality in London. However, some businesses on Oxford Street have expressed concerns about the impact of the ban on their trade.

The Mayor's office says that it will work with businesses to help them adapt to the changes. It will also provide funding to support sustainable transport options, such as electric buses and bike-sharing schemes.

The plans are now subject to a public consultation. If they are approved, the traffic ban could be introduced as early as 2025.
